Peter Colbert

Meadows End, Acrylic on Canvas, 36" x 60"

Peter Colbert is a graduate of Humber College in Toronto. He began his career as an award-winning art director and illustrator before embarking on his full-time career as a fine artist in 2007.
Colbert considers his works to have impressionistic roots, crossing into pure abstraction. Drawing from the natural world, he strives to capture the essence or spirit of what he sees. Layering  glazes of colour, the work takes on a life of its own, separating it from the initial reference point. Simplicity and freshness are prized over minute detail.
Colbert has exhibited in more than 25 solo and group shows and exhibitions and has won multiple awards for his efforts. He has made Ottawa his home since July of 2011.

My personal journey with art has been very rewarding to me, and I try to make every day of work a fun experience. When I look back at what I was doing 30 years ago regarding painting I find the essence of what I do hasn't really changed all that much. You are who you are and you can't change that... I was fortunate to have had a natural drawing ability and my experience in the graphic design and illustration industry has served me well. it's just how I translate this basic knowledge to the canvas that's been the real adventure. The mixing of paint, applying colour and how these interrelate is the crux of what I've been working at and learning about these past many years. To reduce things to their simplest form is a difficult thing to do, but I try to cut to the chase and depict the heart, the energy of a subject.
Applying mixes of paints to the canvas with different implements is really what I concentrate on, really for me the essence of painting. My passion is watching how the colours and paint interact and with my arsenal of implements I can garner a range of effects. I mix, move and manipulate them in a myriad of ways until I'm satisfied with the final result.
A lifelong endeavour and a great ride.
