In/Out: Contemporary Photography and the Politics of Difference- A Look Ahead
Thursday, September 30, 2010 until Sunday, October 17, 2010Vernissage: September 30th, 7-9pm. RSVP required.
This fall, as a part of Festival X, Wall Space Gallery will showcase the work of the students of the School of Photographic Art Ottawa, SPAO. The exhibition will kick off with a vernissage on September 30th from 7-9pm and will culminate in a panel discussion on October 3rd from 1 to 3 pm. Festival X participants are asked to “explore ideas of connectedness, alienation, social norms and diversity.” The title of the exhibition “In/Out: The Politics of Difference: A Look Ahead” reflects the emerging photographers’ prerogative to draw unexpected people and places into the frame of the photo or to provide a fresh perspective on familiar subject matter. Though mainly working in the traditional medium of black and white dark room photography, these students have created images with a distinctly current feel. Moody and confrontational portraits stare the viewer down heedless of their puffy eyes or scar tissue. Images of derelict buildings, sewer pipes and attic garrets beckon our investigation of bleak environments.
“Looking Ahead” to a world characterized by the democratization of image making, the near death knell of the photofinisher and the antiquitization of the darkroom; one might ask where the artist-photographer fits in. A panel discussion will address such questions, as well as those related to the photographer’s creative process and the presence of the artist’s hand in a medium often perceived as purely technical. Wall Space Gallery’s Katherine Jeans, both a mixed media artist and documentary film maker, will be a panelist along with SPAO students, and Director of SPAO, Michael Tardioli. The discussion will be moderated by Jenny McMaster, associate gallerist at Wall Space Gallery and the public is invited to participate.
Vernissage: Thursday, September 30th, 7-9 pm, by invitation.
Panel Discussion: Sunday, October 3rd, 1-3 pm
