Crystal Beshara (BFA, FOWS, SBA) is a Canadian contemporary realist painter and proud two-time winner of the prestigious Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation prize. A self taught realist, her childhood was spent drawing and observing life on a farm and the quiet, connective world in which she lived. Even after moving to Ottawa to receive her BFA in Studio, Crystal's strong rural narrative continued to play a huge role in her paintings. Her style is a juxtaposition of two worlds; where her love of realism collides with her post secondary studies creating expressive and emotionally charged works of art that have been collected by corporate, private and commercial clients.
Shortly after graduating with her BFA she became the youngest elected Fellow of The Ottawa Watercolour Society at the age of 23. She is an elected member of the esteemed, National Guild of Realism and holds a Botanical Illustration diploma from the Society of Botanical Artists (UK).
She has illustrated 4 published children’s books. Her work has been featured and reviewed in Canadian House & Home, Modern Family Magazine, The Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Sun, The Quill & Quire, and Montreal Review of Books. Beshara is the primary sketch artist for the award winning television series Hard Rock Medical.
A familiar face in the media both as an illustrator and fine artist she has been a regular guest art instructor on Rogers Daytime television, appeared on CBC Television, CBC Radio All in a Day, CTV news, and on CTV Regional Contact. Crystal also offers painting workshops abroad in Sante Fe, France, England and Mexico, as well as locally in her home art studios.
“Whether I am working on a personal or corporate commission in oil, watercolour, pencil or pastel, my ultimate objective is to get at the heart of my subject matter. My artwork is a colliding of two worlds: Realism and Expressionism. Realism allows me to trigger the cerebral that is human nature – our desire to recognize a place, shape or subject. Expressionism allows me to infuse my personality. The strokes, drips and splatter are results of my physiological and intuitive relation to the medium at hand, offering a more ephemeral level of connectivity – nostalgia, resistance, desire, loss, love.” ~ Crystal Beshara
