Originally an art director/illustrator who worked in Toronto and Vancouver before taking becoming a fine art full-time in 2006, Peter Colbert's paintings are collected world-wide.
Colbert believes that capturing the essence of a subject, whether landscape, abstract or human figure, is what he is about. Starting from a quick sketch, he believes in the colour and flow of the paint dictating the way his art takes shape. Subject matter is of secondary importance to the composition and character of the painting. Allowing spontaneity and a certain freshness to come through is vital and gives him more satisfaction than does grinding out detail with multiple highlights and shadows.
Colbert has exhibited in more than 25 solo and group shows and exhibitions and has won numerous awards for his efforts. He currently resides in Ottawa.
My personal journey with art has been very rewarding to me, and I try to make every day of work a fun experience. When I look back at what I was doing 30 years ago regarding painting I find the essence of what I do hasn't really changed all that much. You are who you are and you can't change that... I was fortunate to have had a natural drawing ability and my experience in the graphic design and illustration industry has served me well. it's just how I translate this basic knowledge to the canvas that's been the real adventure. The mixing of paint, applying colour and how these interrelate is the crux of what I've been working at and learning about these past many years. To reduce things to their simplest form is a difficult thing to do, but I try to cut to the chase and depict the heart, the energy of a subject.
Applying mixes of paints to the canvas after working out an interesting composition is really what I concentrate on, really for me the essence of painting. My passion is watching how the colours and paint interact and with my arsenal of tools I can get a range of effects. I mix, move and manipulate them in a variety of ways until I'm satisfied with the final result.
A lifelong endeavour, my passion - and a great adventure.
