Join us for the opening of Far and Wide, Saturday Sept 9th, 5-7 pm
In his newest series “Far and Wide,” Richard Ahnert further explores the Canadiana narrative. This body of work invokes the nostalgic romanticism of the wildlife and people that make this vast land home—from coast to coast to coast.
The show draws heavily on Canadian iconography and nature symbolism. As they are in most of Ahnert’s work, animals are shown displaced from their habitats and realities. Voluntary or forced, their departure preludes a new social order, one that is marked by the inevitable displacement and subdual of animal life by humans.
This series emphasizes the sanctity of our precious Canadian land and its inhabitants, while alluding to the harsh realities that follow from human intervention. Not only do these paintings celebrate our glorious heritage and landscape, but they also remind us of our own folly.
